Early registration rates for the 2012 Upper Midwest Invasive Species Conference (UMISC) in La Crosse, Wisconsin will expire on September 14, 2012. This year’s conference will be held October 29-31, 2012 and will be one of the largest gatherings of professionals, academics, and citizens in the Upper Midwest to discuss the challenges and opportunities for managing the spread of invasive species. Sessions will cover aquatic, terrestrial, animal, plant, insect and interdisciplinary topics. With over 180 oral and poster presentations, unique workshops and tours, and plenary presentations from the region's leading experts, there will be something for everyone to learn! Regional, national, and international leaders of invasive species research and policy will present the latest research and information during the Monday morning and Tuesday lunch plenaries. UConn scientist develops sterile variety of invasive plant. Scientific breakthrough could help restore the popular ornamental shrub Euonymus alatus, otherwise known as burning bush, to prominence in commercial marketplace.
Professor Yi Li's Laboratory in the University of Connecticut's College of Agriculture and Natural Resources has developed a seedless variety of the popular ornamental shrub Euonymus alatus, also called 'burning bush,' that retains the plant's brilliant foliage yet eliminates its ability to spread and invade natural habitats.
